When to Schedule Your Puppy or Kitten’s First Vet Visit

We recommend bringing your new kitten or puppy in for their first vet visit within the first week or two of welcoming them home. From there, we will want to see them at 8, 12, and 16 weeks for their vaccines.

We also recommend scheduling an appointment around six months of age for your pet to be spayed or neutered, although timing may vary depending on your pet’s size. This is also a great time to complete any remaining preventative care.

We can’t wait to meet your new pet!

Kitten and Puppy Vet Care FAQs

When should I bring my new puppy or kitten to the vet?

We recommend a first visit within the first one to two weeks of bringing your pet home. Early visits help us establish a health baseline and get your kitten or puppy’s vaccination schedule started on time.

What vaccinations does my puppy or kitten need?

Core vaccines for puppies include DAPP, leptospirosis, and rabies. Kittens typically receive FVRCP and rabies. We’ll walk you through a vaccination schedule tailored to your pet’s lifestyle at your first visit.

How many vet visits does a puppy or kitten need in their first year?

Young pets need more frequent visits than adults. After their first appointment, we typically recommend check-ins at 8, 12, and 16 weeks to complete their vaccination series, followed by a visit around six months for spay or neuter planning. Depending on your pet’s size, the timing for spay or neuter may vary slightly. After that, annual wellness exams keep them on track.

Should I get my puppy or kitten spayed or neutered?

We recommend discussing spaying and neutering at your first visit so we can plan the right timing for your pet. For most dogs and cats, the procedure is recommended around six months of age, though this can vary by breed and size.

What should I bring to my puppy or kitten’s first vet visit?

If you have any records from a breeder, rescue, or previous vet, such as vaccination history, deworming records, or health certificates, please bring those along or submit them to our office ahead of time.
