Pet Travel Documentation & Health Certificates FAQs

How far in advance should I book a travel health certificate appointment?

We recommend getting in touch with our team as soon as possible if you are considering travelling with your pet. Some destinations have strict windows for when a health certificate is valid, and certain countries require additional processing time for documentation. For example, Australia and New Zealand require planning and testing up to one year prior to travel. We can help you figure out a timeline for your pet depending on destination at your first travel consultation.

What does my pet need to travel to the United States by land?

Currently dogs travelling into the USA from Canada must be at least 6 months of age, must have an ISO-compatible microchip, must appear healthy upon arrival and must complete an online CDC Dog Import Form before entry and carry the receipt (digitally or printed).

If your dog is returning to Canada, they will still need to meet Canada’s import requirements. Your dog will require proof of a current rabies vaccination issued by a licensed veterinarian. The certificate should include a description of your dog, the vaccine used, and the expiry date. Your dog will also need to appear healthy at the border.

Does my pet need a health certificate for domestic travel within Canada?

Requirements for domestic travel vary depending on your mode of transport. Some airlines require a health certificate issued within a specific timeframe. We’ll confirm exactly what you need based on your travel plans.
